Deliberate Positivism or Poverty Porn; Which is More Effective?

By James Wyett

Have you ever been watching TV, or scrolling through the internet when you come across an advert highlighting the suffering of a small child? Maybe even an advert including positive imagery surrounding the same type of problems? These are both different types of humanitarian appeal methods.

Both poverty porn and deliberate positivism are methods of humanitarian appeals used by NGO’s such as Oxfam and Save The Children, whose aim is to eradicate poverty and boost development in LIDC’s. Many NGOs utilise these methods to raise awareness of the problems faced by the subject group in the adverts, as well as to influence the target audience to consider donating.
